Graduate Structural Engineer
Build your future with us
If you are here looking for the opportunity to start your career...
... we are ready to welcome great people into our team to do rewarding and challenging work together.
Sound like this might be what you’re after? Let’s find out a bit more about it...
Can you imagine yourself passing through your hometown or city and being able to proudly point out the buildings, structures and infrastructure that you have contributed to?
That is what life is like for many of our team at Curtins as over the last 60+ years, we have re-shaped and improved the skyline of many of our towns and cities.
But what will I actually do?
You will be working with colleagues on different projects and learning new things pretty much straight away. To get a good understanding of how structures work and how buildings are put together and you will be looking at things like how loads are transmitted and resisted, and how different materials are used. You’ll be using software to model and design structural elements and then carry out some hand checks to verify your answers.
We work on a lot of different types of buildings, so you will be working on a real mixture of things; old and new, big and small and covering pretty much every sector.
We like to keep people involved in projects from start to finish, so you will get to see how design progresses from concept through to detail and onto construction. You get to see your designs come to life, piece by piece and step by step.
A lot of your work will be design based, but you will also have some involvement in the management side of projects. There is also an opportunity for you to get involved in some wider things such as STEM work, charity support and other community based activities.
What kind of projects will I get to work on?
A real mixed bag! We don’t really specialise at Curtins so you will get the opportunity to work on anything from multi-million pound new build schemes to local community buildings, preserving heritage structures and giving old buildings new life with sustainable solutions. We work for lots of different clients, so every project is different. Many of our project are award winning so you will also get to work on things you can be proud of.
Once you have got a broad level of experience, you may want to focus on a particular type of building or particular design approach. Our people are some of the UK’s leading consultancy experts, so if you would like to specialise in conservation of heritage buildings, Modern Methods of Construction or carbon reduction, Curtins can help you find your calling.
What training & support will I get?
We have a strong focus on our learning culture and we actively support staff through all stages of their career with us. For you this would begin with enrolment in our award-winning Curtins Academy for graduates.
The Curtins Academy is a structured 4-year program designed to allow you to grow technically, professionally, and commercially. It is aligned to the Engineering Council and accepted by all the major professional institutions as well as Curtins being an ICE in-House Training Scheme provider. Our structured pathways enable you to progress to charted status within 4 years of graduation and become a considered and well-rounded engineer.

After that, the sky’s the limit! We have further training programmes available too, such as STEP Ahead for management, TEQ for technicians and ongoing training for our leadership team to help you fulfil your long-term aspirations.
However, we also recognise that we can help our team to feel fulfilled in their work by enabling our people to just get better at what they do. So, we also have lots of ways to allow you to specialise in areas of interest or to follow a different career path.
As a graduate at Curtins, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in our Reverse Mentoring Programme, where junior members of the team can mentor our senior leaders to improve our business, challenge the status quo and drive change – something we like to do in our day to day work at Curtins!
Our Learning and Development team have won many prestigious accolades in recognition of their commitment and “refreshing approach to graduate training” including the “Excellence in L&D” award by Construction News and “Innovative Training Programme” from the ACE, and they exist to help you become the very best that you can be.
